Deep Sea Diver
Chris Lemons, an experienced deep-sea diver, found himself stranded 300 feet below the ocean's surface in icy darkness with no heat, light, and only 5 minutes of breathing gas. His rescuers were over 40 minutes away. His extraordinary survival story was later captured in the Netflix/BBC documentary 'Last Breath' and is now being adapted into a Hollywood film featuring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Finn Cole.
In his compelling talk, Chris takes audiences on an edge-of-the-seat journey, providing an honest and emotional testimony of facing imminent danger and the surprising revelations that unfold in such critical moments.
With over 18 years of experience, Chris Lemons is a seasoned commercial diver, specializing in deep-sea saturation diving. This intricate form of diving requires him to reside in the cramped decompression chamber for up to 28 days, commuting daily to the sea bed in a diving bell, and working at depths of up to 900 feet for 6-hour shifts.
In September 2012, an unexpected failure in the dynamic positioning system of the vessel he was working on led to the complete severance of the umbilical providing him with breathing gas, light, and heat. Stranded on the seabed 300 feet below the surface, in total darkness, he had only the 5 minutes of emergency breathing gas on his back, with no protection from freezing temperatures. His courageous rescuers took over 40 minutes to retrieve him, and his miraculous survival continues to puzzle experts to this day.
Chris cautiously delves into the transformative impact of facing mortality, emphasizing how confronting death can sharpen one's focus on life and prompt contemplation of the finite nature of our time on earth. Chris further explores practical and physiological factors that might have played a part in his miraculous survival.
Going beyond the miracle, he highlights the significant role teamwork, preparation, training, procedures, drills, and practice played in his recovery. Chris demonstrates how implementing these elements can greatly benefit not only your professional sphere but also your overall life.
